Day 9: Tiger Leaping Gorge - Naxi Guesthouse

After approx 3hrs into the journey we could smell burning and the driver pulled over. He did not seem too happy but pushed on to a garage where it took approx 5hrs for the bus to be fixed. We got back on the road again about 4am, nightmare. This meant that rather than arriving at the gorge at 7am we got there at noon.

Nobody on the bus spoke English and nobody was offering any help on when we should get off. Kris managed to follow the Chinese signs and position of the river and bridges to tell that we should get off and we had to ask the driver to pull over. Who knows where we would have ended up if it wasn’t for him paying attention!

We took a short walk over a bridge towards Jane’s Guesthouse glad of the fresh air as we had inhaled near on 20 cigarettes last night. On the way we were accosted by a woman named Marjorie who was very in your face and we took an instant dislike to her. It was our intention to get to Jane’s place and grab a room for the night, relax and do a laundry however we got chatting to some other foreigners who were just leaving the gorge and they recommended if we had enough energy we should hike to the first guesthouse and stay in the mountains.

Having got to Jane’s we had lunch and feeling like we wanted to stretch our legs after the recent travelling we left our big bags there, left her our laundry and packed a small bag of bits to start hiking the best hike in China. We were advised it was only 2hrs to Naxi Guesthouse which sounded perfect. During this hike the sun was still out and the scenery is breathtaking. The river running through the gorge is crystal blue and there are snow capped mountains either side of us.
We made it to the Naxi Tibetan hostel having climbed approx 500m to an elevation of approx 2,000m. This place is amazing! Its clean, friendly, cheap and has everything you need from a western toilet to free internet to electric blankets! We splashed out on the most expensive room of £14 just to get the best view in the house, its lovely here and has made last night seem worthwhile
