Day 13: Sleeper Bus from Kunming to Hekou

I chatted with other travellers until near midnight then crashed in our lovely room while Kris continued to play the boss at pool and drink into the night. He was waiting for the 2am Manchester United champions league match to be shown here but unfortunately got the time wrong as it started at 4am and he fell asleep only to wake up part way through it!

We were up for breakfast at 8am as our taxi to the bus was due at 9am. We shared the taxi with a couple from Switzerland and managed to do some money exchange with them for Hong Kong and Vietnam as they were pretty much doing the reverse of our route. We caught the bus for the 4 and half hour ride back to Kunming. Between sleeping and chatting to a Canadian guy next to us the journey went relatively smoothly.

We arrived at Kunming at one bus station and had to trek across town to the long distance bus station. We managed to seek out a helpful English speaking lady who booked us on the sleeper bus leaving at 7.30pm for the 13hr ride to Hekou being the border town for Vietnam. We therefore had a few hours to waste having already seen the highlights of Kunming we found a fast food place and managed to stretch a burger meal and ice cream sundae over 3hrs at it was a clean environment with relatively clean toilets! For an added bonus it also had free Wifi.

We returned to the bus station at 5.30pm and waited for 2hrs in amongst the not so nice environment but we got chatting to a bloke from USA who also enjoyed cycle touring so the time passed quickly. We found our bus and managed to not get scammed for paying for our luggage and climbed up onto our top bunks which impossibly seemed even shorter and narrower than before!

Having took ages to actually leave the very busy and grid locked city we made it on the faster roads and were finally on our way to Vietnam!
