Day 7: Sleeper Train from Guilin to Kunming

To our surprise the electric switched on at about 22.30 and so we had heat at last! We therefore managed to shed a couple of layers of clothing as we had gone to bed with all our clothes on plus sleeping bag and blanket.

We had intended on getting the 9am bus but as we woke to the alarm at 8am we decided the 11am bus would suit us just fine. We drew back the curtains to pure white fog and rain and were immediately glad that we had done the hike yesterday. We had a lovely hot shower all be it while trying to hover over the toilet, then put on our many layers in order to face the elements again.

We took a short walk into the village accompanied by chickens, dogs and pigs. We found the same restaurant as yesterday to grab breakfast and used their internet while we dined. It took half an hour with all our bags to climb down the mountain side back to the bus park. We made the 11am local bus where we met two more foreigners this time German Martin and Jacob.

We took the local bus into Longsheng town then transferred onto a direct bus to Guilin which took about 3hrs in total. This time was made quicker as the bus showed a Jackie Chan movie which kept us entertained. Guilin is a massive town but we made it with ease from the bus station to the train station. Martin and Jacob are also taking the sleeper train to Kunming so we bought 4 hard sleeper tickets for the 18hr journey which was also fairly straight forward as we had asked an English speaking Chinese lady previously to write down exactly what we required in Chinese which helped.

We had 2hrs until departure so we all went to a local restaurant for lunch/dinner. The food was ok and cheap but the buckets of fresh live fish and cages of live chickens at the entrance kind of made me lose my appetite. We made it back to the train waiting area where we were boarding with just 20mins to spare. We found our carriage number 10 and cabin number 11/12. We have the top bunks which is the cheapest and the most ideal place to be.
We are currently laying in our bunks as the roof is only approx 2 feet above the bed we are unable to sit up anyway. Its cosy up here at the moment but its only been an hour, we shall see if it has the same feel in another 17hrs!
